Victoria Gowri is an attorney and a former BJP party member. Victoria completed her master’s degree at Mother Theresa University in Kodaikanal after earning her law degree from Madurai Law College. On February 7, 2023, she made headlines when she and four other people were sworn in as new judges for the Madras High Court (Tuesday).
A petition against her has been filed, and the Supreme Court has set aside time to hear it.
Gowri was appointed to lead the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Women’s Wing in Tamil Nadu in 2010. She ran for the party’s nomination in the 2014 general election in India.
Her appointment as a judge of the Madras High Court received approval from the Collegium of the Supreme Court of India on January 17, 2023. Approximately a week later, it was claimed that Gowri had delivered hate speeches against Christians and Muslims.
She was also noted to have promoted the Islamophobic conspiracy theory of Love Jihad among other similar ideas. On February 1, some attorneys petitioned the Indian President to revoke her appointment. They then filed a case with the Supreme Court of India, requesting the same reliefs.
The Collegium’s chairman, the Chief Justice of India, appointed a two-judge bench on January 6 to consider the case a week later; in oral remarks, he appeared to admit ignorance of Gowri’s speeches. The Government, however, approved the Collegium’s proposal shortly after the judgment, and the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court asked her to take the oath the following day.
The scheduled hearing was postponed and held on the morning of January 7 before a bench comprising Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and Sanjay Kishan Kaul; they dismissed the case after an oral hearing, declining to contest the collegium’s judgment and engage in judging the “suitability” of a judge.
