American actor, Will Smith has resigned from the Academy, the body that awards the Oscars.
On Friday, April 1, 2022, the actor tendered his resignation from the body that awards the Oscars after his infamous attack on comedian, Chris Rock on stage while the show was been broadcasted live to over millions around the world.
In a statement released by the actor, he stated that his actions, which overshadowed Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, were “shocking, painful and inexcusable.”
It was earlier reported that the actor was facing possible expulsion or suspension from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
And in effect to the impending punishment, he has decided to walk away from the Academy to save his reputation and the name of the Academy.
The statement read: “I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” the actor wrote in a statement carried by multiple outlets.”
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.“
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.”
“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.
“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.
“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
