In 1989, Nazir started working at Commerce International Merchant Bankers Berhad’s corporate advisory division. In 1999, he advanced to the position of managing director and chief executive of the bank, which at the time was known as CIMB. In 2014, he resigned from his position as CEO and assumed the role of chairman, a role he held until 2018.
Nazir led the transformation of CIMB Group from a boutique investment bank in Malaysia to the second-largest financial services group in Malaysia, the largest investment bank in Asia Pacific, the fifth-largest universal bank in ASEAN, and one of the biggest Islamic banks globally during his time as CEO.
Nazir made the decision to voluntarily take a month-long leave of absence from CIMB in April 2016. This resulted from an inquiry into a $7 million transfer from his brother Najib into his own account related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scam. Nazir was declared innocent following the CIMB Group examination, and he went back to serving as the chairman of CIMB Group and a director of CIMB Bank.
In addition to his work at CIMB, Nazir has held a number of other posts. These include the head of the EPF’s Investment Panel Risk Committee, director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad from 2014 to 2018, and member of the Employee Provident Fund’s Investment Panel from 2002 to 2017. He has also served as a member of the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government’s International Advisory Board since 2015.
