The LGBT+ Community in Ghana has communicated how frustrated and hopeless they feel about Akufo-Addo’s intolerance against them.
In a letter signed by Mr. Alex Kofi Donkor, the Director of LGBT+ Rights Ghana on March 8, 2021, the community wrote, “In 2017, your position on the subject during the interview on Aljazeera gave us HOPE that finally we had a President who understood the dynamics of the issue at hand and whose government would be tolerant to the rights of minoritized groups like us…But events since that time have worsened our plight and made us become more endangered.”
Following the opening of the LGBT+ resource center in Accra, Ghana, the community received a massive backlash as Ghanaians are heavily against homosexuality. The President ordered for the centre to be shut down, and vowed that he will never legalize gay marriages as long as he is President.
