At the final funeral ceremony held for the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, the meaning and significance of the names of his four children were revealed.
This revelation was done by his senior daughter and MP for Klottey Korley Hon. Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings.
1, Zanetor: Meaning and Significance
Rawlings named his first daughter Zanetor after her birth on June 1, 1978, to signify an end to the doom and gloom of happenings in Ghana at that time.
The name Zanetor is of “Ewe” inclination which means “An end to the darkness.” According to her daughter, her father gave her that name to mark the end to the political darkness and corruption in Ghana.
2, Yaa Asantewaa: Meaning and Significance
Rawlings named her second daughter Yaa Asantewaa to signify the courage and unparalleled determination of Yaa Asantewaa, the historic Queen-mother of Ejisu who led the war against the colonial masters when the Ashanti king was exiled.
According to the revelation, Rawlings named her child at the moment so she will grow into an independent woman who exudes boldness, courage, charisma and a determination to stand out and fight for the poor and helpless.
3, Amina: Meaning and Significance
Rawlings named her third daughter Amina to signify the historic Amina the queen of Zaria, modern-day Nigeria, the first woman to become a ruler in a male-dominated society.
Amina was given the name so she can grow to defend the defenceless and stand for justice at all time.
4, Kimathi: Meaning and Significance
Rawlings named his son and fourth child Kimathi to signify the historic Dedan Kimathi, the Kenyan military inspiring leader who led his people in several uprisings that led up to the independence struggle against the British colonial rulers.
Kimathi was named to grow into a strong leader who will not be afraid to stand for what is right and just.
Rawlings gave these names to his children to epitomize his strong beliefs and Pan-Africanism. Also, Rawlings did not name any of his children after himself so to allow them to discover their fates and life all by themselves.
Rawlings is gone but his memories are etched on the hearts of Ghanaians and his footprints shall be traced through the capsule of time.
