Born and raised in the vibrant neighbourhood of Bowes Park in north London, Charalambous’s upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of community and a drive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around him. His roots trace back to the beautiful island of Cyprus, where his parents hail from the towns of Kalo Chorio and Fasoulla, near Limassol.

Education played a pivotal role in Charalambous’s journey to becoming a respected public servant. He attended Tottenhall Infants’ School and St Michael-at-Bowes Junior School, where he later became a school governor. His academic pursuits led him to Chace Boys’ Comprehensive School, followed by Tottenham College and Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University). It was during his time at university that Charalambous developed a passion for law and was elected vice president of the Students’ Union in 1990.

Equipped with a law degree and a desire to serve his community, Charalambous embarked on a career as a solicitor. Before he was elected a Member of Parliament, he worked diligently for Hackney Council in their housing litigation team, fighting to ensure fair and just living conditions for residents. This experience gave him firsthand insight into the challenges faced by individuals and families struggling with housing issues, further motivating his dedication to fighting for their rights.

Charalambous’s commitment to public service extended beyond his role as an MP. He served as a member of Enfield Council for the Palmers Green ward for an impressive 24 years, making a lasting impact on his local community. Additionally, he held the position of Associate Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture, Localism, and Young People, demonstrating his multifaceted approach to addressing the needs and aspirations of his constituents.

Although Charalambous faced initial electoral challenges, his persistence and unwavering determination eventually paid off. He contested the Epping Forest constituency in 2005 but was unable to unseat the Conservative incumbent. Undeterred, he continued to strive for change, contesting the Enfield Southgate seat in both 2010 and 2015, before finally achieving victory in 2017. In a momentous turn of events, Charalambous unseated David Burrowes, who had held the seat since 2005, securing his place as the Member of Parliament for Enfield Southgate.

Throughout his political career, Charalambous served on various committees and played an active role in numerous All-Party Parliamentary Groups. Notably, he served on the Justice Select Committee, delving into issues of paramount importance such as ensuring a fair and accessible justice system for all. Additionally, he dedicated his time and expertise to groups focusing on London, Cyprus, Crossrail Two, Autism, Sex Equality, Music, Global Education For All, and London’s Planning and Built Environment. His broad involvement showcased his diverse interests and his determination to address a wide range of social and cultural issues.

Charalambous’s dedication and expertise did not go unnoticed within the Labour Party. In January 2018, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Rebecca Long-Bailey, the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. This role allowed him to contribute to shaping Labour’s policies and initiatives in these crucial areas. Subsequently, in December 2018, he was appointed as an Opposition (Labour) Whip, further exemplifying his growing influence within the party.

In January 2020, Charalambous’s significant legal background and passion for justice led to his appointment as a Shadow Minister for Justice. His deep understanding of the law and his unwavering commitment to fairness made him an ideal fit for this important position. However, it was under the leadership of Keir Starmer, who assumed the position of Labour leader in April 2020, that Charalambous took on a new role in the shadow Home Office team. As the Shadow Minister for Crime Reduction and Courts, he worked tirelessly to develop policies aimed at creating safer communities and ensuring a fair and effective justice system.

In May 2021, Charalambous participated in a minor reshuffle within the shadow Home Office team, swapping roles with Holly Lynch and becoming the Shadow Minister for Immigration. This new responsibility placed him at the forefront of discussions surrounding immigration policy, where he aimed to strike a balance between compassion and practicality, ensuring that the United Kingdom’s immigration system remains fair and just.

However, in June 2023, Charalambous’s career took an unexpected turn. He was suspended as a Labour MP following an allegation that required investigation by the Labour Party.
