Sergeant Cory Maynard, aged 37, was one of three troopers who promptly responded to reports of gunfire in Mingo County’s Beech Creek area on June 2nd, according to local authorities cited by West Virginia MetroNews, ABC News, and NBC News. Tragically, they encountered a hail of bullets upon arrival, and Maynard was pronounced dead upon reaching a nearby hospital.
The alleged suspect, 29-year-old Timothy Kennedy, reportedly fled the scene on foot, as per West Virginia MetroNews. Following an intense manhunt that lasted nearly seven hours, law enforcement apprehended Kennedy on Friday evening, as reported by the same source.
Kennedy has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Sergeant Maynard, according to jail records cited by WOWK-TV. However, he has pleaded not guilty. Currently, he is being held without bond at the Southwestern Regional Jail.
