After earning his degree from the University of Pennsylvania, McCaskey spent two and a half years in the American Army’s 80th Division during World War II.

He later sustained injuries, but he declined to receive the Purple Heart and was later given the Bronze Star Medal and a combat infantry insignia.

Ed McCaskey worked as a salesman and vocalist in a band during the war, but Frank Sinatra beat him out for a spot in the Harry James Band.

In 1943, McCaskey married Virginia Halas, the daughter of Bears founder, owner, and head coach George Halas.

The owners of the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively, Bert Bell and Art Rooney, were sent as McCaskey’s “agents” by George Halas to investigate his misgivings.

Ed McCaskey was appointed vice president and treasurer of the Bears in 1967. When George Halas passed away in 1983, Virginia Halas McCaskey became the team’s major owner, Ed took over as board chairman, and their son Michael served as team president.

The next year, McCaskey appointed his son as the franchise’s operating head.

Following a number of events, including the bungled selection of Dave Wannstedt’s replacement and the aborted attempt to construct a new stadium, McCaskey gave up his role as chairman of the board to Michael in 1999. Michael was then appointed to that post.

McCaskey passed away on April 8, 2003, at home in Des Plaines, Illinois; he had been ill for some time and was survived by his wife and eleven children.

A “plaintive piano rendition” of the Chicago Bears battle song “Bear Down, Chicago Bears” was performed during his funeral.

By becoming friends with Brian Piccolo and assigning him to share a room with Gale Sayers, McCaskey made a lasting impression on the Bears. They were the first interracial roommates.

After Sayers received the George S. Halas Courage Award, McCaskey composed a speech he dedicated to Piccolo. This speech was later remembered in the movie Brian’s Song, for which McCaskey served as a consultant.

In 2003, the Bears placed an orange shamrock-shaped patch on their uniforms as a tribute to McCaskey.
