First royal wedding of 2023; Sultan of Brunei’s daughter Princess Azemah marries her first cousin

The daughter of the Sultan of Brunei, Princess Azemah has tied the knot with her cousin in a lavish ceremony.

Princess Azemah 38, and her new husband Prince Bahar ibni Jefri Bolkiah who is her first cousin held their marriage ceremony at the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei at residence Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan earlier this month.

The 76-year-old billionaire, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, gave his daughter Princess Azemah and her new husband their blessing which paved the way for the one-week ceremony on January 11th.

The traditional service was held at the Balai Singgahsana Indera Buana on the palace grounds which involved the couple’s family blessing them with colored rice powder and rubbing scented oils into their hands to wish them well.

After the traditional ceremony, the couple then held their Islamic ceremony at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which is one of Brunei’s national landmarks.

At the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the groom of the ceremony pronounce his vows in front of an all-male group of attendees, including the Sultan, who acted as his daughter’s representative at the wedding. 

After they had officially tied the knot, the Sultan also had a reception at his residence for guests.

Princess Azemah is the Sultan’s fifth daughter. Last year, the royal family held another marriage ceremony for the younger sister of Princess Azememah, Fadzillah Lubabul married Awang Abdullah Nabil Mahmoud Al-Hashim.
