Ghanaians have collectively expressed mad anger at an international news portal description of Ghana as “world’s poorest people”
These words were used in the caption of a news item by British free-to-air television news channel SKY NEWS.
Sky News chose to describe Ghana as the world’s poorest people following the free distribution of the 600,000 doses of COVAX under the World Health Organization program.
Ghana becomes the first African country to receive these vaccines to vaccinate 20 per cent of its population as the fight against the deadly COVID-19 goes on.
Sky News has incurred the wrath of Ghanaians and Africans across the globe after tyhe described Ghana by writing: flight carrying 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine has arrived in Ghana as part of a global effort to immunise the world’s poorest people
This caption clearly reflects how most of these international organizations and platforms view most of the nations on this continent.
Since Ghana was not able to purchase these vaccines and had to rely on the WHO to get the first batch for free, it has become expedient for SKY NEWS to describe Ghana as the world’s poorest people.
This is not the first time such a disparaging, demeaning and outright nonsensical caption or description has been used for Africans…the reactions can be read below:
