Araminta Rose was the place of Harriet Tubman’s birth in March 1822. She was an American-based political activist and abolitionist. Her parents, Ben Rose and Harriet Green, were held as slaves. Prior to her escape, she was also born into slavery.
She took advantage of a network of anti-slavery activists to save some of the Underground Railroad homes. She served the Union Army as an armed scout and spy during the American Civil War. She participated in the women’s suffrage movement later in life.
On a slave ship from Africa, Tubman’s maternal grandmother arrived in the United States. Although Kate Larson identifies the year as 1822 and other historians identify the year of her birth as 1820, there is also a chance that it occurred a year or two later.
Like many enslaved people in the United States, neither the exact year nor the place of her birth are known. She was told as a child that she had the personality of an Ashanti person, although there is no proof to back up or disprove this assertion.
