Minister-designate for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry, Mavis Hawa Koomson found it a daunting task when she appeared before the Parliament’s Appointment Committee today.

She was to be vetted on her understanding of her new role, how prepared she is for the ministry, her overall knowledge about the sectors she will be supervising and some mistakes of the past.

The vetting commenced by the Chairman of the committee, First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu asking her why she pulled a trigger during the 2020 Voter Registration Exercise at a registration centre at Kasoa in the Senya East Constituency.

Hawa Koomson replied by saying she feels remorseful for her actions and believes her overall attitude on the day was irresponsible and “unhonourable.” In fact, she added that she acted on the spur of the moment and out of fear and definitely regrets her action.

Thereafter, the former Special Initiatives Minister was asked question around her general knowledge of the Fisheries industry. One of the committee members asked her to define the term “Fish Farming” and another asked her to give advantages of fish farming.”

Hawa Koomson who has clearly forgotten her Agriculture Science notes was completely at a loss as she fumbles to give a clear and distinct answer to the question.

She laughingly said: Thank you Mr Chairman, I will try my best. Fish Farming is the process of rearing of fish in the reservoirs, fish ponds etc…”

Answering the question on the advantages of Fish Farming, Hawa Koomson said: ‘One advantages of Fish Farming is it makes the farmer earn some income and it also increases fish in the community for consumption…[sic]

These answers did not convince the committee and Ghanaians watching.

Many Ghanaians believe Hawa Koomson does not only fail to articulate her thought rightly and finds it difficult to speak flawless English but also lacks understanding about the ministry she has been appointed to head.
