The sins in Sodom and Gomorrah were too much that God himself saw from Heaven. And so, God sent two angels who came to witness and punish the town for their sins. Lot provided shelter for the two angels who appeared in human form. In the end, Lot’s wife also died and in this post, we will look at what really happened.
Sodom and Gomorrah Was A Hub of Sinners
The story of Lot appeared in Genesis 19. Two angels appeared in Sodom and when Lot saw them offered to host them for the night. The men in Sodom however were forced to break into Lot’s home with the request of sleep with the two men (angels) who were with him. Lot objected and instead offered his two daughters but the men will not accept.
At dawn, the two angels urged Lot and his family to flee because they were sent by God to destroy the city. Their only command was recorded in Genesis 19:16 which reads “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” Lot’s wife however disobeyed and looked back. And so she turned into a pillar of salt.
Why Did Lot’s Wife Turn Into A Pillar of Salt?
Lot’s wife had only one command to escape the punishment on Sodom and Gomorrah. However, she disobeyed the angels’ command and is not looking back. This is also recorded in Luke 17:31-32 which reads On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. Remember Lot’s wife!
What Can Christians Learn From The Story of Lot’s Wife?
As Christians, the Bible warns us against unworldly desires if we want to save our lives. We must not look back to worldly desires. Once we choose God, that’s it.
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. – 1 John 2:15
