Circuit Court 1 in Accra has convicted a 25-year-old Lebanese citizen who was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport for possessing fake currency.
Al-Zoubayr Chaaban was convicted after he pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of fake currency note contrary to section 18(2) of Currency Act. 1964 (Act.242).
The Court presided over by His Honour Prosper Gomashie convicted the accused on his own guilty plea which made the judge hand him a non-custodial sentence.
Al-Zoubayr Chaaban was fined 700 penalty Units, equivalent to GHc8,400. In default, he is to serve two years of prison term.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Amoah Richard of Legal and Prosecution Unit of the CID Headquarters in court read that the accused person was caught by authorities at Kotoka International Airport after a thorough search in his bag revealed stacks of fake dollars amounting to $10,000.
