The era of a new dawn has been enacted after the NDC’s Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin was installed as the Speaker of Parliament, which is the first time a minority member has assumed that position in the history of Ghana.
The results declared suggested Mr. Bagbin, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli Kaleo Constituency beat his contender and immediate past Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, who was re-nominated by the NPP caucus.
The development has sparked a wild reaction on social media as Ghanaians dissect the issue. Moreover, this is the first time the NDC and NPP have the same number of lawmakers- 137 apiece with one independent candidate.
Actress and filmmaker, Lydia Forson also added her two cents. She wrote;
There’s a shift happening in politics, not just in Ghana but all over the world and I’m here for it.
This shift is about the people more than it is about the politicians.
I welcome this new normal.
