Mariska Magdolna Hargitay is an actress, director, and philanthropist from the United States. Her achievements include a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

She is the daughter of actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay and actress Jayne Mansfield.

Hargitay, the daughter of actress and 1950s sex icon Jayne Mansfield, was born at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Her father was Mickey Hargitay, a former Mr. Universe who was born in Hungary.

Hargitay participated in cheerleading, student government, sports, the theatrical department, and cheerleading while attending Marymount High Institution, a Catholic secondary school.

She graduated from high school in 1982 and decided to pursue acting at UCLA since she enjoyed it. Hargitay was named Miss Beverly Hills USA in the same year.

Hargitay already had an agent and had a number of little roles under her belt by the time she was a student in college. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma member while she was a student at the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television.

After winning the title of Miss Beverly Hills USA in the early 1980s, Hargitay started performing in high school. She enrolled in UCLA and attended the School of Theater, Film, and Television after completing her high school education at Marymount High School in 1982.

She left college early and joined the Groundlings improv company in Los Angeles, although she did not finish her degree. Soon after, she started to appear in lesser roles on television.

She had started to get guest starring parts on shows including “Falcon Crest,” “Tequila & Bonetti,” “Seinfeld,” and “ER” by the late 1980s.

In the spring of 1999, Hargitay attended an audition for Dick Wolf’s police procedural television show “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

She auditioned for the part of Detective Olivia Benson, the female lead. Samantha Mathis and Reiko Aylesworth were among the other candidates being considered for the position.

Producers ultimately chose her and Christopher Meloni, who was competing for the role of the male lead, based on the chemistry they had displayed during their final audition.

Hargitay completed rape crisis advocate training to get ready for the part of Benson. With a constant appearance on the program beginning in 1999, Hargitay has gone on to hold the record for the longest-serving cast member of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
