Jaron Zepel Lanier is a famous American computer scientist who has contributed greatly to the development of virtual reality. He is also a visual artist, computer philosophy writer, technologist, futurist, and composer of contemporary classical music.
In 1985, Lanier and Thomas G. Zimmerman left Atari and started VPL Research, Inc. This company was the first to sell VR goggles and wired gloves, which revolutionized the way people interacted with computers. Lanier has worked on several other projects related to virtual reality, including applications for Internet2 and research at Microsoft.
In addition to his work in computer science, Lanier is also a composer of contemporary classical music and a collector of rare instruments. He owns one to two thousand rare instruments, and his acoustic album, Instruments of Change, features Asian wind and string instruments like the khene mouth organ, the suling flute, and the esraj. Lanier has received many accolades for his contributions to various fields.
In 2005, he was named one of the top 100 Public Intellectuals by Foreign Policy. He was included in the TIME 100 list of most influential people in 2010. The British magazine, Prospect named him one of the top 50 World Thinkers in 2014. Wired also named him one of the top 25 most influential people in the last 25 years of technological history in 2018.
