Just when we thought this year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards will not be wrapped in any controversy, it seems we are totally wrong. Controversies has marred the once upon a time prestigious award ceremony to the extent that the PRO of Chaterhouse Nii Ayi Hammond came out publicly to appeal to the general public to stop abusing the organisers.
Moments after the release of nominees, Guru pulled out citing personal reasons albeit admitting the VGMA is no longer credible. Then, Medikal’s name popped up in the artiste of the year category raising serious questions.
Medikal is a very good rapper and had a relatively good year but he still doesn’t qualify to be put in the artiste of the year category.
Explaining this, Mark Okraku Mantey said, “I think Medikal’s strength was within the universities and more of the younger people. I agree that some of us didn’t see too much of Medikal but the younger folks saw more of Medikal and that is why he earned a nomination. We [Hitz FM] tried to do something with Legon during its SRC week celebration and when I went there, spoke to some of them, I realized that they keep mentioning Medikal. These are some of the things that emerged on the board,”
We just hope the controversies will not be extended to the award ceremony itself else Chaterhouse will have their reputation in tatters forever.
