Petr Klima, a former Czech NHL player, passed suddenly on Thursday at the age of 58, the Edmonton Oilers announced.

The forward played for five different clubs for 13 years in the NHL, spending six of those years with the Detroit Red Wings and five with the Edmonton Oilers.

Klima racked up an amazing 313 goals and 260 assists for 573 points in 786 regular-season games throughout the course of his career, in addition to 671 penalty minutes and 36 game-winning goals.

In 1985, Klima made NHL history when he defected to the Detroit Red Wings, being the first player of Czech descent to do so.

His choice occurred five years after brothers Peter and Miroslav Stastny made the same move to the Quebec Nordiques.
