Richie Burnett is a Welsh professional darts player who plays in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He is a former World No. 1 who won the 1995 Embassy World Darts Championship.
Richie Burnett bio and career
Burnett was born in Cwmparc, Rhondda, and first gained widespread fame soon after the game’s split, when the PDC and the BDO players broke up.
In 1994, Burnett started to win a lot of championships in the BDO, including the Dutch Open, Welsh Open, British Matchplay, and Danish Open.
After defeating Steve Beaton in the championship match, he added one of the two BDO major championships, the Winmau World Masters.
Despite making his début at the 1995 BDO World Darts Championship, he had advanced in the rankings to earn the number two seed. He went on to win the championship by overcoming Raymond van Barneveld 6-3 (sets) in the final after defeating Peter Wright, Russell Stewart, Paul Hogan, and Andy Fordham.
Burnett would also make it to the BDO World Championship final twice more, falling to Steve Beaton in 1996 and Raymond van Barneveld in 1998. His 1996 final defeat marked his first loss at Lakeside and put a stop to a streak of nine straight victories in matches.
The 1998 championship match entered its 11th and decisive set and a tiebreak. Burnett had a chance to win the match, but he barely missed his second dart at treble-14, leaving him on double 20, and he was unable to capitalize.
Burnett lost unexpectedly to Erik Clarys and Colin Monk in the 1995 and 1996 Winmau World Masters finals, two years after capturing the 1994 Winmau World Masters championship.
