One of Pakistan’s greatest vocalists, Nayyara Noor, passed away in Karachi after a brief illness. She was 71.

Her family made an early Sunday morning announcement of her passing.

Born in Guwahati, Assam in India, Nayyara Noor, also known as “Bulbul-e-Pakistan” (the Nightingale of Pakistan), spent her early years there before moving with her family to Karachi, the capital of the newly founded Pakistan, a few years later.

Her vocal prowess was first noted while she was a student at Lahore’s prestigious National College of Arts, and by the late 1960s, she had made her state television debut.

Despite the fact that she had a broad career and many outstanding songs, she would be best remembered for her renditions of poetry by Pakistan’s renowned revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, which were published in the anthology Nayyara Sings Faiz in 1976.

Nayyara Noor died as a result of an undisclosed disease that caused her to spend a lot of time in bed before she went away. Her family hasn’t made her particular cause of death public, though.
