Azazel appears in several places in religion. It is associated with the scapegoat rite; that is the goat bearing the sins of the Jews during Yom Kippur. Azazel is also associated with a fallen angel responsible for introducing humans to forbidden knowledge. Azazel’s role as a fallen angel remains in both Christianity and Islam traditions.

Who Is Azazel In Christianity?

Most Bible Commentary refers to Azazel as the Hebrew word for a scapegoat as seen in Leviticus 16:8-10. Extra-biblical Jewish theological literature also sees Azazel as a fallen angel as seen in the old testament in the Bible.

In Islam, Azazel appears in the story of Harut and Marut. In the story, Azazel is seen as a pair of angels. According to Islamic teachings, three angels were chosen to complain about human iniquity. The angels chosen were Aza, Azzaya and Azazel. However, Azazel repented and was allowed back into Heaven while the other two changed to Harut and Marut. They ended up on earth and introduced men to illicit magic.

Azazel and Abraham

From Genesis 15:11, the Bible says that “Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away”. According to the Extra-conical text of the Apocalypse of Abraham, Azazel appeared as an unclean bird who came down upon the sacrifice which Abraham prepared as stated from the reference above.
