Her mother, Lynette Sisi Mbau worked in the finance department of the pension fund at Barclays Bank. However, she retained her mother’s surname, Mbau for that of her dad which is unknown.

Later, her mother, Lynette, was obliged to take her with her grandparents due to the nature of her job. Her grandfather, Mr. Babes Mbau, instilled in her a love of art. Thereafter, she enrolled in an all-white school while living with her grandma. Lasizwe Dambuza and Thandeka Mcunu are Khanyi Mbau’s two sisters.

Khanyi Mbau got romantically involved with Mandla Mthembu (a former Obben Island Inmate, who is a multi-millionaire) in 2005 when he was 50 years old and got married in July 2006.

They announced that they were living apart after the South African Music Awards incident at Sun City which involved Mandla Mthembu accusing Khanyi of infidelity and gold-digging.

In 2007, the couple reconciled but in 2009, they separated.

In October 2009, Khanyi got involved with 51 years old construction mogul, Theunis Crous, who just bought her a BMW Z4.

In January 2010, rumors broke that their relationship ended and Crous took back his BMW Z4.

Mbau started acting in 2004 with the role of Doobsie on Muvhango where she replaced actress Lindiwe Chibi. She joined the SABC 1 drama series Mzansi in 2006 which was followed by a role as Zee in the SABC 1 mini-series, After 9.

She starred in the Dstv Vuzu documentary, I Am, and played the role of Sindisiwe Sibeko on DStv’s Mzansi Magic mini-series “Like Father Like Son”.

In 2016, Mbau became the host of a radio show on Metro FM, Whose show is it anyway, alongside entertainers, Somizi Mhlongo and Ntombi Ngcobo. The show premiered nationally on July 18, 2016, and ran for a year until it came to an end in the reshuffle of the station.
