Imagine falling pregnant on purpose with a man’s donated sperm, only to find out that he was not anything he claimed to be?
Would you choose to keep the baby or put it up for adoption? Well for this woman in Japan, she chose the latter.
Woman Uses Donor To Fall Pregnant
According to Japanese media outlets, a Tokyo resident, age 30, chose to have her second child via sperm donation. This after learning that her husband carried a hereditary disorder that could be spread to his future children. While the couple already has one child, the woman chose to use social media to find a man to help them conceive a child. Not exactly the normal way of going about it. Ultimately, this has led to her giving her new baby up for adoption instead of keeping it.
The reason for the woman using such an unconventional way of obtaining sperm in the first place is because of the laws in Japan, of which there are none regarding sperm donation. According to Business Insider, there is only one actual sperm bank in Japan, which has opened the doors to black-market sperm donation such as that which this woman sought out.
As a result, there is a thriving black market in sperm on social media and 10,000 children have been born from sperm obtained through these unofficial arrangements, according to media reports.
Baby Given Up For Adoption
The woman, who has chosen not to be named, selected her sperm donor based on his education. That, and the fact that he was a successful Japanese man. The pair had sex ten times in order for the woman to fall pregnant. But, since finding out that the man lied to her. Turns out he is actually a Chinese man, who is married and holds no significant education. She has now chosen to put the baby up for adoption. Of course, her choice has received much backlash.
She’s not just putting the child up for adoption, but also suing for fraud, citing “emotional distress” caused by his lies.
“In Japan, there is no public system or legal system for sperm donation,” the woman’s lawyer said during a press conference Tuesday. His client has relayed that the ordeal has caused her physical and emotional distress. This was due in part to the backlash prompted by her decision to give up the child.
But Mizuho Sasaki, a child welfare worker in Japan, called the woman “shallow,” in a statement to Vice, for “treat[ing] the child like an object.”
Sasaki added, “But I think it’s better to leave the kid with someone who can be a good foster parent.”
