Reno Omokri, the Nigerian Lawyer and author has said that one would be plunging themselves into poverty when they decide to focus on their wants instead of their needs.
A need is something that is absolutely necessary for a person to have, without which it becomes difficult for them to go about their daily activities; a want, on the other hand, is one that we can do without; call it luxury and you won’t be entirely wrong.
If your house is just a stone’s throw away from your workplace, you don’t need a car to go to work every day, but you’ll want to have it for yourself.
According to Reno Omokri, accommodation, feeding, clothes, are our needs, and we should be spending more on those than on our wants which we can definitely do without them.
The author’s comments were addressing women with Bone straight hair who would be sending messages out there to people telling them of their urgent need for one need or the other when they have decided to spend more on their wants, I.e, the bone straight hair they have on their heads.
This comes after a lady on Twitter posted that she needed 150k to enable her to rent a shop in Lagos because she had lost her previous shop because the landlord threw her out.
The said lady wrote; “Please I need at least 150k to rent a shop in Lagos I would really appreciate ur help am a welder. I lost my former shop because it was sold without proper notice and the new landlord threw us out. Am not lazy I just want to some help to get to my feet again”.
Reno Omokri then replied by saying that the bone straight hair she carries is a want and that she should focus more on her needs. According to him, the lady’s urgent need is self-inflicted.
“Bone straight hair is a want. You can’t have it and send me an ‘I urgently need $100’ text. Your urgency is self-inflicted. Accommodation, feeding, clothes, are needs. The more you spend on wants, while you have pending needs, the more you sink into poverty,” he wrote in reply.
