YouTube Is The Cause of The Collapse of Ghana Movie Industry – Mercy Asiedu Tells Movie Stakeholders

Kumawood actress Mercy Asiedu has said on Kumasi-based Agyenkwa FM that YouTube is the destroyer of the Ghanaian movie industry. The actress in her rightful thinking posited that movie enthusiasts now watch films on YouTube and don’t buy CDs any more.

According to her, Ghanaians living abroad were the ones mostly purchasing local movies but the current trend of uploading newly-produced movies on Youtube has slowed down sales since they watch them for free.

“Anytime there is a new movie, you will see it on YouTube hours after its release. How will someone who has watched a movie on YouTube take money to purchase a copy?”, she quizzed.

She added that, Ghanaians outside were the ones buying most of Ghanaian movies but they now watch the films on YouTube causing the a drastic decline in the purchase of CDs.

“When I made my recent trip to U.S.A, I realised all movies in Ghana are on YouTube so they just log onto the internet and they start watching them one after the other”, she said.

However, prio to this revelation coming from Mercy Asiedu, stakeholders of Ghana movie industry attributed the collapse of the industry to the influx of soap operas or better still Telenovelas in the country.
